More than an event.
A community.
Starting September 14, 2013, and run entirely by volunteers — BarCamp Ferizaj was where curious people from Ferizaj and across Kosovo came together to share ideas, tell stories, and build connections across technology, education, culture, and civic life.
How It Started
On September 14, 2013, a small group of volunteers in Ferizaj opened the doors to the first BarCamp Ferizaj. The city's second-largest urban center had curious, driven people — developers, students, activists, entrepreneurs — but no regular space for them to find each other, learn from one another, or connect across disciplines.
The idea was straightforward: create an informal monthly gathering where speakers could share ideas and innovations, and the audience could engage directly. Free to attend. Organized by volunteers who believed in doing good for their community. A different core theme each edition, proposed and shaped by the community itself — by the audience and by anyone who wanted to contribute.
"We booked a hall, announced it on Facebook, and waited. Thirty-five people showed up. That was more than any of us expected."
People stayed late. Someone suggested doing it again at the end of next month. That suggestion became a seven-year commitment and one of the most consequential community initiatives Ferizaj had ever seen.
The Format
Each edition gathered 2–3 announced speakers around a unifying theme. The expectation was clear: be informal, tell a story. Share the personal and professional experiences that led to your achievements. Talk about the skills, the discipline, and the mindset it took to get there. Inspire the young people in the room to take their own initiative.
What was never acceptable: using the stage as a direct promotion for a commercial product or personal gain. BarCamp Ferizaj was a platform for ideas, not advertisements.
After every presentation, the floor opened. Attendees asked questions, challenged assumptions, and shared their own experience back. The conversation was direct, unfiltered, and often extended well beyond the scheduled time — because nobody wanted it to end.
"The talk was the beginning. The conversation that followed was the point."
Topics & Reach
Technology was the original anchor — websites, smart devices embedded in everyday life, internal systems of companies, web development, startups. But BarCamp Ferizaj proved immediately that it was never just a technology event.
Education — both formal and informal — took the stage early. So did culture in all its forms: theatre, music, painting, creative practice. NGOs explained their work. Civic activists discussed the responsibilities of public institutions. Entrepreneurs shared how they built things from nothing in Kosovo's particular conditions.
"Every edition was a different slice of what Ferizaj cared about at that moment. Fifty editions is fifty chapters of the city's story."
Speakers came from the community and were suggested by the community — by attendees, supporters, and anyone who cared about the program. The organizing team welcomed ideas from anyone who wanted to help shape it. At its peak, 160+ people filled the room for a single edition, many travelling from elsewhere in Kosovo. For a free, volunteer-run gathering in Ferizaj, that number said everything about the appetite that had always existed, waiting for a space.
Why It Mattered
BarCamp Ferizaj became an important part of young people's lives in the city. For a long stretch of its run, it was the only regular, open forum where Ferizaj's curious people — regardless of profession, background, or age — could sit in the same informal venue and genuinely learn from each other.
Connections formed here led to jobs, collaborations, friendships, and careers. Students found mentors. Professionals found peers outside their usual circles. People who had never spoken publicly found an audience that listened and responded. The network that accumulated across 50 editions was itself the lasting result.
Edition #50 was not an ending. The community it had built — informal, distributed, held together by shared curiosity and the belief that Ferizaj deserves spaces like this — did not dissolve when the editions stopped. And the work to bring something back has never fully paused.
Year by year
September 14 — The First Edition
Thirty-five people, an informal venue, a volunteer team. Technology, web, and local innovation. A city discovers it has a gathering place.
Education & Civic Life
Formal and informal education took the stage. So did NGOs and civic initiatives. The community realized BarCamp was bigger than technology from the very start.
Culture Joins the Stage
Theatre, music, painting, creative practice. Public institutions. Every edition brought a new angle on life in Ferizaj and Kosovo — and drew curious people from across the country.
Part of the City's Life
100 people at Edition #25. Smart technology, entrepreneurship, civic innovation. BarCamp had become a fixture — an important part of young people's lives in Ferizaj.
Harder Questions
The stories got more honest. The Q&As ran longer. The network of connections built edition by edition had become something real and lasting.
Five Years
Edition #40 — half a decade. Mental health, gender equality, the role of public institutions. Topics that mattered to the community, proposed by the community.
Edition #50
160+ people in the room — many from across Kosovo. A milestone. The informal community BarCamp had built across seven years remained very much alive — and still does.
What we left behind
BarCamp Ferizaj paused. The community didn't.
The people who met in those rooms went on to build companies, join international teams, teach the next generation, and carry the conversations forward in other spaces. Ferizaj's community of curious people didn't start with BarCamp — but it grew up alongside it, and the impact of those 50 editions is still being felt today.
Plans are being made to return — in a form that honours what BarCamp Ferizaj was and builds on it. The city hasn't lost the appetite. Neither have we.
Work is underway to bring BarCamp Ferizaj back. Stay close — the next chapter is being written.
